Thermoplastic polyester is a liquid mixture of unsaturated polyester and styreen. These two components can react with each other under the influence of a hardener (peroxide) to become a hard plastic. Polyester is often reinforced with glass fibre.

The processing of glass fibre reinforced polyester is possible in many ways. One of the most known fabrication techniques is the hand lay-up process. The mould surface is treated with several layers of release agent and then spray coated with a pigmented polyester resin called a gel coat. The surface of the mould will be duplicated by the gel coat. The desired cross-section and strength of the laminate is reached by adding the necessary layers of glass mats or glass fabric. The mould is milled in our tool shop from wood or foam and is finished with the required surface quality. Polyester hand lay-up is used as prototyping technique or to produce large parts in small quantities. Rotomoulded parts can be simulated with polyester prototypes.

Polyester parts can also be fabricated with the spray-up process. The spray-up process is similar to hand lay-up except that a mechanical spray system is used to apply both chopped glass strands and polyester resin. A chopper gun is connected to resin, catalyst, and glass strands. Air pressure is used to direct the steam toward the mould surface. The ratio and amount of glass and resin is controlled by the air pressure and mechanisms of the gun. The thickness of resin and glass is controlled by the speed of the gun as it moves across the surface. The spray-up process is much faster then hand lay-up. Spray-up systems can be controlled by a robot.
